SageTech™-Windows
I'm new to Windows. What are the most important things I need to know to get started?
Welcome to Windows! Here are the key things to get you started:

Turning it on and off: Locate the power button on your computer case or laptop. Press it once to turn it on, and to turn it off, click the Start button, then the power icon, and choose "Shut down."

The desktop: This is the main screen you see after logging in. It has icons (small pictures) that represent programs, files, and folders.

The Start Menu: Click the Start button (Windows logo) in the bottom left corner to access your programs, settings, and recently used files.
The taskbar: This bar at the bottom of the screen shows you open programs and lets you switch between them.

Using the mouse: Practice moving the mouse to move the pointer on the screen. Click the left mouse button to select things, and double-click to open them. The right mouse button often brings up a menu of options.
How do I find and open my programs?
You can open programs in a few ways:

Start Menu: Click the Start button, and you'll see a list of your installed programs. You can also use the search bar at the top to find a program by name.

Desktop shortcuts: If you have program icons on your desktop, double-click them to open the programs.

Taskbar: If a program is already open, its icon will appear on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. Click it to switch to that program.
What are files and folders, and how do I create them?
Think of files like digital documents (like letters or photos) and folders as containers to organize them. Here's how to create them:

Open File Explorer: Click the folder icon on the taskbar or press the Windows key + E.

Navigate to where you want to create the folder: Use the folders on the left side of the window to find the location.

Create a new folder: Right-click in the blank area, choose "New," and then "Folder." Give the folder a name.

To create a file: Open a program like Microsoft Word, create your document, and then save it with a name.
How do I connect to the internet using Wi-Fi?
Click the Wi-Fi icon: It's usually in the bottom right corner of the screen and looks like a little antenna or a computer screen with lines radiating from it.

Choose your network: Click the Wi-Fi icon and select your home's Wi-Fi network from the list.

Enter the password: If your network has a password, type it in and click "Connect."
How do I make the text on my screen bigger? It's hard to read.
You can make things easier to see by adjusting the display settings:

Right-click on the desktop: Click the right mouse button on an empty area of the desktop.

Choose "Display settings": This will open the display settings window.

Adjust the scale: Look for "Scale and layout." You can increase the scale percentage to make everything larger.

Change the resolution: You can also try changing the screen resolution to a lower setting, which can make things appear larger.
How do I delete files or folders that I don't need anymore?
Open File Explorer: Click the folder icon on the taskbar.

Find the file or folder: Navigate to the file or folder you want to delete.

Delete it: Right-click on the file or folder and choose "Delete." You can also drag it to the Recycle Bin on your desktop.

Empty the Recycle Bin: To permanently delete the files, right-click on the Recycle Bin and choose "Empty Recycle Bin."
What is a web browser, and how do I use it?
A web browser is a program that lets you view websites on the internet. Popular browsers include Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. To use one:

Open the browser: Click the browser's icon on your desktop or in the Start Menu.

Type a web address: In the address bar at the top, type the website address (like www.google.com) and press Enter.

Browse the website: Use the mouse to click on links and navigate the website.
How do I keep my computer safe from viruses?
Install antivirus software: A good antivirus program will help protect your computer from viruses and other malware. Ask us for help on this if you need it by emailing us at support@sagetech.ca.

Be careful what you click on: Don't click on links in emails from people you don't know, and be cautious about downloading files from the internet.

Keep your software updated: Make sure your Windows operating system and other programs are up to date with the latest security patches.

Use strong passwords: Choose strong, unique passwords for your online accounts.
